  • Empowering Communities: Nassib Said’s Path from Beneficiary to Budget Champion

In the picturesque coastal region of Kwale County, Kenya, lies Msambweni sub-county, a place where community development was once a distant dream. This serene coastal town, with its palmfringed beaches and lush landscapes, hides a tale of hardship and unfulfilled potential. However, the winds of change have swept through this community, and at the forefront of this transformation stands Nassib Said Mwamchita, a budget champion and facilitator.

Nassib’s journey towards becoming a catalyst for change in Msambweni sub-county began when he became a beneficiary of the Muslim Women Advancement of Rights and Protection (MWARP) budget training session through the program funded by The Netherlands Embassy through UNDP who’s overall objective is Strengthening Civil Society Voice in order to enhance good governance, accountability and service delivery in Kwale county for the realization of Sustainable Development Goals in Kenya by 2025. This initiative was designed to equip individuals like Nassib with the knowledge and tools to bridge the gap between the county government and the grassroots communities, thereby promoting good governance and accountability. Nassib’s story is a testament to the transformative power of education and community engagement.
Before Nassib received training from MWARP, Msambweni sub-county was grappling with myriad challenges. The youth and women in this region faced limited opportunities for economic empowerment, and their voices were often unheard in matters affecting their lives. The lack of awareness about their rights and the county budgeting process left them vulnerable to neglect and marginalization.

Nassib Said Mwamchita vividly recalls the state of affairs before the MWARP budget training sessions intervened, saying, “Our community was in dire need of guidance and empowerment. Many of us were unaware of our basic rights as citizens of Kenya, let alone understanding how to engage with the county government. It was a frustrating situation, and we knew that something needed to change.
The transformation began when Nassib attended MWARP’s budget training sessions, which covered crucial topics like the Bill of Rights as enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution of 2010, county budget cycle, Public Finance Management Act and the importance of public participation in the county budgeting process. Nassib was not only a keen learner but also a natural leader. He absorbed the knowledge like a sponge and soon realized that he could play a pivotal role in uplifting his community.
Understanding our rights and the power of public participation was like a lightbulb moment for me,” Nassib explained. “I knew I had to share this knowledge with my fellow community members, especially the youth and women who were often sidelined.
Nassib’s dedication to community development led him to create a ripple effect that reached far and wide. One of the groups he worked closely with was the Uongozi Bora Community group in Ukunda ward. Before receiving the MWARP budget training, this group, like many others, faced challenges in accessing county resources and services. Their pleas often fell on deaf ears, and their aspirations
seemed unattainable.
However, after the budget training administered by Nassib and MWARP, the Uongozi Bora Community group underwent a remarkable transformation. Armed with knowledge about their rights and the importance of public participation, they became a formidable force advocating for their community’s well-being.
Mariam, a member of the Uongozi Bora Community group, shared her experience, saying, “Before the training, we felt helpless and ignored. But Nassib empowered us with the tools to engage with the county government effectively. We now know how to demand accountability, and our voices are finally being heard.
The transformation was not limited to Uongozi Bora alone; it spread like wildfire throughout Msambweni sub-county. Nassib’s tireless efforts to capacitate youth and women groups led to a groundswell of civic engagement. Community members began actively participating in public budgeting meetings, demanding transparency and accountability from their leaders.
Nassib Said Mwamchita had become a beacon of hope in his community, a true budget champion and facilitator. His dedication to empowering others was palpable, and his influence was undeniable. Reflecting on his journey, Nassib said, “I never imagined that learning about budgets and the constitution could have such a profound impact on our community. It’s not just about numbers; it’s
about people’s lives and their future. When we all work together, we can create meaningful change.”
Under Nassib’s guidance, Msambweni sub-county saw improvements in the allocation of county resources to projects that directly benefited the community. Roads were repaired, healthcare services were expanded, and educational opportunities for the youth improved significantly.
Nassib Said Mwamchita’s story serves as an inspiring example of how one person’s dedication and knowledge can ignite positive change in an entire community. Through MWARP’s budget training intervention , he not only transformed his own life but also unlocked the potential of countless others in Msambweni sub-county.
The impact of this program goes beyond budgets and numbers; it extends to the hearts and minds of the people it touches. The once marginalized youth and women of Msambweni sub-county now stand tall, empowered by the knowledge of their rights and the tools to demand accountability from their leaders.
As we look to the future, Nassib’s story reminds us that every community harbours the potential for transformation. It takes individuals like Nassib, armed with knowledge and a commitment to positive change, to unlock that potential and lead their communities toward a brighter tomorrow. The journey may be challenging, but as Nassib Said Mwamchita’s success demonstrates, the destination
is worth every effort.
